15 years ago: Red, White & Blue Fire Protection District names Lori Miller as its fire chief

The Red, White & Blue Fire Protection District is boasting an historic first in Colorado — the first female chief of an all-professional fire department. The district announced on June 24, 2011, that Lori Miller has been chosen as its fire chief, succeeding Gary Green, who resigned in May. Fire officials say Miller is joining just a handful of other women nationwide who head all-professional fire departments. Miller started her 26-year career at Boulder Fire Rescue in 1985 and attaining the rank of captain. She and her partner moved to Silverthorne in 2004, where she eventually transferred to the Red, White & Blue and rose to the rank of deputy chief. (She retired from the department at the end of 2012, and served on the Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue and Summit Fire & EMS board of directors, serving as president from 2021 to 2024 when she retired from service).
